wake up [browser]

Wake up by Inverge Studios is a minimalist narrative game about a normal person living in a not so normal country, created for ResistJam, a game jam about creating games that resist oppressive authoritarianism in all its forms.

  1. I personally don't like the game play or the story.
I don't like the drug caffeine or the drug alcohol.
I don't like what this game encourages in any way.

  2. I played this game all the way through and I love it! This is my kind of game! Love how they came up with the interactions to drive the story.

  3. So inspiring. And so relevant in this day for a U.S. citizen. I'm sharing this with my fellow resistors.

  5. Really want to play this, won't give me anything other than a white screen. :/

  6. @Elizabeth: Are you using Internet Explorer?
If you are still using Internet Explorer it will not be running because it's a html5/webgl game. Internet Explorer is a discontinued series of webbrowser... so I would strongly suggest you switch to a more recent browser, if only for reasons of safety (so not only for webgl support) because it no longer gets updated. So I suggest you switch to FireFox or Chrome, or if you want to stay with Microsoft upgrade to their Edge browser.

  7. Would not load for me in FF or Safari on OSX yesterday. Did today... (add block disabled, so not that...)

  8. Hi, one of the game devs here. We are happy to see you enjoyed the game!

@Elizabeth @Anonymous Wake Up is our first game for browser so the loading time is longer than expected. I'm pretty sure we can improve it learning some tricks about HTML5 WebGL on Unity for our next games!

  9. I liked this one a lot. Would have preferred not to have to drink so much while spending time with the friend, but the general feeling and intention is conveyed by that requirement so I understand the choice of the devs with it. Thanks for sharing this with us, Bart! Nice to see games like this being created and supported.

  10. Bart, another Anon made it clear that they're having issues with the game on their own browsers, so IE is obviously NOT the issue.

  11. Great game! Powerful message. ..And I don't recall seeing any reference to alcohol. I just remember seeing "drink", which could be water or juice. And the coffee, could be decaf if you don't like caffeine. Nothing said get caffeinated and drunk. If that's all you took from this game then you totally missed the point.

  12. I think the first comment is just trolling. I promise to all of you, our idea and sensations to convey are not related to drugs xD

  13. @Carol Why is this so relevant in this day for a U.S. citizen? The politics of the regime were never told. It did not say whether they were liberal or conservative. Throughout history both sides have been oppressive and authoritarian if the citizens allow it to happen.

  14. Thank you for this game! I think it's quite obvious this is U.S. related, that is also why this game jam arose.

  15. Doesn't work at all for me. I keep getting an error reading "You need a browser which supports WebGL to run this content. Try installing Firefox."

Fine, but I AM running Firefox 51. The game doesn't seem compatible with Firefox either, which is the browser it is recommending!

  16. Okay this made me tear up a bit. It's got a powerful message.

  17. This is not a game, it's an anarchists' message.

If there were different outcomes; alternative routes available, then it would be considerably more interesting. As it stands, it's just a rebellious story told at a very slow, boring pace.

    Yawn.

  18. I'm not sure how I feel about the message, but it is a very powerful experience emotionally. I honestly almost started crying in the part where you have to wake up and not click cry. I respect the "resisting oppression and authoritarianism" message, but the thing that I disliked the most was that when I clicked "rebel" while walking to work, I got punching noises. Is the message here that the most effective way to "rebel" is not impulsively, but in a thoughtful manner? Or am I reading way too much into that?

  19. Oh MAN, that gave me some inspiration. It's the type of game that makes you feel like you're accomplishing something important, and that's the kind I love. Pret-ty amazing.

  20. Very very powerful. Inspiring music. I got chills when I breathed and the troubling messsages went away. Amazing.

  21. Wonderful little game. The focus on minimalist design and sound use to convey a message was really cool to see in a browser game.

I really enjoyed the story. The message was never given a specific context, and as there are certainly historic and modern day contexts within which people find themselves battling between personal morals and the views of an oppressive government, I think it's great; especially so within the context of the entire game jam this was originally a part of.

If the purpose was to tell the story of one character, it was done creatively and emotionally, however I agree that the general lack of "options" and exploration made this a little flat as a game; in terms of an interactive story and just overall, it was wonderful to play.
