Alphasia is a cryptic puzzle game about language barriers created for the Mind-re-set game jam, a game jam where participants develop serious games related to migration, migrants, and identity. What's amazing is that the creators Hye Ri, Seo Hee and Pierrec didn't even understand each others language.
You can download this free game for Windows or Linux.
It took me quite a while to figure out what I had to do, but once I understood it was smooth sailing to the end :)
ReplyDeleteCould use an ending though... feels a bit rushed now.
ReplyDeleteThis is cool. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat is fun about this ?
ReplyDeleteFor those who are where I was on my first playthrough (which was mostly, "Help! Why is the cat mad at me?"), here are the rules I figured out that served me fairly well:
ReplyDelete1. The little man in the box is you, navigating the conversation.
2. The buttons are for up, down, left, and right.
3. The thing the other person says usually corresponds to your location in some way.
4. There are sometimes invisible walls in the conversation. (This seems pretty meaningful.)
5. When you hit a wall: a) you will not move, and b) the other person will get mad at you, or upset or something (I think...).
6. The goal of the conversation is to get to the edge of the conversation through which you can exit, and exit through it. This will cause the other person to be obscenely happy with you and repeat whatever they said last. (Hint: For the second and third conversations, the exit point seems to be almost the same.)
These are all pretty tentative, as the game is so short I barely had time to figure them out.
@jj: Is that the same thing you figured out? I'm curious if there's another way.
ReplyDeleteYes Nat. that is more or less my take away from the game too :) I thought you had to complete the conversation, to go around the complete grid.
